Revolutions per Minute (RPM) Grade: Below Average

The Hitachi C18DL 18 Volt 6-1/2” Cordless Circular Saw has a top RPM of 3400. The average top revolutions per minute (RPM) of 6 1/2" cordless circular saws is 3700. The faster the blade spins the faster it will make the cut. This will allow more cuts per battery charge. The blade will not get as hot and will last longer as well.

Cutting Depth Grade: Good

The Hitachi C18DL 18 Volt 6-1/2” Cordless Circular Saw has a maximum cutting depth of 2.25 inches. The maximum cutting depth is how thick a material you can cut through in a single pass. For construction work, you really want to be able to cut through a 2x4 which is just over 1 1/2' thick. The average cutting depth for cordless circular saws is 2.19 inches.

Bevel Depth Grade: Average

The Hitachi C18DL 18 Volt 6-1/2” Cordless Circular Saw has a maximum bevel cutting depth of 1.56 inches. The maximum bevel cutting depth is how thick a material you can make a beveled (on angle) cut through in a single pass. Although not as important or used as often as a regular cut, it still may come into play on occasion. The average bevel cutting depth for cordless circular saws is 1.61 inches.

check mark

Battery Run Time: Good

The battery run time for the Hitachi C18DL 18 Volt 6-1/2” Cordless Circular Saw is 3.0 amp hours. A longer battery run time will give you more cuts per charge. A circular saw requires more power than a drill and so a good battery is very important. The average for cordless circular saws is 2.73 amp hours. The ampere-hour rating (Ah) gives you an idea of how long your battery will last between charges. For example, a 3Ah will usually last 3 times longer than a 1Ah battery.

Battery type and quantity: Excellent

The Hitachi C18DL 18 Volt 6-1/2” Cordless Circular Saw comes with 2 Lithium-ion batteries. You really need to have a minimum of 2 Lithium (also written as li-ion or lithium-ion) batteries to effectively use this drill for an extended length of time. Lithium batteries are lighter , can hold a charge longer, and are more environmentally friendly than older NiCd batteries. If you have another tool from the same company, you can sometimes use those batteries for each tool. This can save around $100 per battery.

Charger: OK

The Hitachi C18DL 18 Volt 6-1/2” Cordless Circular Saw comes with a 60 minute charger. The better chargers offer less than 1 hour charging and a maintenance mode that can extend the life of the battery. The ideal setup is to have a charger that can charge 1 of your batteries before the battery in your tool runs too low.

Price Range: $300-400

Tool Weight: Average

The Hitachi C18DL 18 Volt 6-1/2” Cordless Circular Saw weighs 7.9 pounds. The average 6 1/2" cordless circular saw weighs about 7.9 pounds. In other tools, weight can be a factor, especially when the work is overhead. Weight isn't such a factor with circular saws because usually most of the weight of the saw is resting on the work piece.**Note If the weight of this tool is an issue for you, then you may be interested in the Makita BSS610 Cordless Circular Saw. It weighs just 7.1 pounds. You can learn more in my detailed review of the Makita BSS610 Cordless Circular Saw.

Durability and Safety: OK

The Hitachi C18DL 18 Volt 6-1/2” Cordless Circular Saw has electric brake but not very durable guard and base plate. Safety is an important factor in a circular saw to me. If you are going to be using this tool for extended periods of time, or making many short cuts, you really need to have an electric brake. An electric brake stops the blade within a couple of seconds of letting go of the switch. My circular saws get banged around quite a bit and it is important that the blade guard and the base plate are not flimsy and can easily be damaged. This will also make the tool unsafe to use.
